Licence codes[edit]

Renewing a driver’s licence in South Africa is fairly easy, but it does take some time, effort and planning. It's important to stay on the right side of the law by driving with a valid driver's licence at all times. When the dreaded time comes to renew your driver’s licence, it usually means standing for hours in a queue at the local licencing department, but this isn’t so much the case in recent times.

Driving licences are issued with various codes that indicate the types of vehicle that may be driven with that licence; the codes are shown in the following table.[2]

CodeVehicle classesIncludes
Motorcycles
A1Motorcycles with an engine capacity of 125 cubic centimetres or less
AMotorcycles with an engine capacity greater than 125 ccCode A1
Light motor vehicles
BVehicles (except motorcycles) with tare weight of 3,500 kilograms or less; and minibuses, buses and goods vehicles with gross vehicle mass (GVM) of 3,500 kg or less. A trailer with GVM of 750 kg or less may be attached.

To transport fare-paying passengers or tourists for a fee, you must have a professional driving permit (PrDP). For example, a Code EC1 licence includes codes B, EB and C1.Code B

Your expiring/expired drivers license. Proof of residential address. (If the proof is not in your name, you need a signed letter from the person who owns the property to say that you reside there) 2 x photos (one for the form and one for temporary license if you need) An up-to-date eye test from your optometrist! They done accept all. This is what you will need when you renew your South African drivers licence in 2017. This handy list of items will make sure you have everything you need. I recently had to pay the Road Traffic Inspectorate the dreaded visit to renew my drivers licence and this is an (un)necessary evil that most South Africans have to endure every 5 years. In South Africa, the driving licence is the official document which authorises the holder to drive a motor vehicle on a public road.Driving licences are issued by authorised driving licence testing centres, which are run by the municipalities under the supervision of the provincial and national Departments of Transport. All Gauteng residents should apply online for the renewal, bookings can be done at online.natis.gov.za, while a separate page also enables customers to download the required application forms. Gauteng motorists can book for the renewal of a driver’s licence, or apply for a professional driving permit (PDP).

Obtaining a licence[edit]

Before applying for a driving licence, a prospective driver must first obtain a learner's licence.[1] The learner's test is a multiple-choice test that examines knowledge of vehicle controls, rules of the road, and traffic signs.[2]

The following criteria required:[3]

  • Rules of the road – There are 30 questions in this category with 22 being the pass mark
  • Vehicle controls – There are 8 questions in this section, the required pass mark is 6
  • Road signs, road markings and traffic signals – There are 30 questions in this category with a pass mark of 23

Three types of learner's licence are issued[4]:

  • Code 1: motorcycles.
  • Code 2: vehicles (except motorcycles) with tare weight of 3,500 kilograms or less; minibuses, buses and goods vehicles with GVM of 3,500 kg or less; and articulated vehicles with GCM of 3,500 kg or less.
  • Code 3: all vehicles (except motorcycles).

The minimum age for a Code 1 or 2 licence is 17, and for a Code 3 licence it is 18. At the age of 16 a Code 1 licence limited to motorcycles with engine capacity under 125 cc may be obtained. Learner's licences are valid for 24 months, and, except for Code 1 licences, require that the learner be accompanied by a fully licensed driver.[2] It is not compulsory for a learner driver to have a big red 'L' on the rear window, but it is recommended so that other drivers can have patience with the driver.

With the learner's licence, the prospective driver can take a driving test to obtain their driving licence. The driving test has two components: the first is the yard test, in which the applicant demonstrates various parking and turning manoeuvres in a specially constructed parking lot. If the yard test is successful, it is followed by the road test, in which the applicant demonstrates their driving ability on the public roads, following the instructions of the examiner.

Some errors on the test, such as a collision, speeding, or rolling backwards when moving off, will cause an instant failure of the test. Other errors cause the driver to lose points; if too many points are lost, this will also cause failure. If the applicant is successful, they will be issued with a paper Temporary Driving Licence, which is valid for 6 months from the date of issue. A permanent card licence will be available for collection at the testing station the applicant went to for the driving test within 4–6 weeks.

Driving Licence Renewal South Africa

Verification of South African Drivers License

Introduction / Process to follow / Location and Contacts

Introduction

Driver
  • Verification of South African drivers licences:

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) will upon request, issue a printout of the licence required and supply a Letter of Confirmation of the licence. This letter reflects the date the licence was first issued.

  • Application for / Renewal of South African drivers licence:

From 01 March 1998, all licence holders were obliged to convert their Identity Document licences to the Credit Card Format (CCF) licence. In the case of private motorists, the conversion period was 5 years with a penalty fee for late conversion. It is not (currently) possible to apply for the CCF licence from abroad, as the issuing of a CCF licence is dependent on an eye test and biometric verification. However, if a South African driving licence holder can supply proof (passport) that he/she was abroad during the conversion period, the increased penalty fee will not be levied. Please note application must be made within six (6) months of date of return. The licence contained in an identity document may only be converted and may not be used to drive with during this six (6) month period.

  • Drivers licence and renting of vehicles:

It might prove difficult to rent a vehicle when abroad and if successful, the insurance premiums may be high. This is due to the fact that South African (CCF) drivers' licences only indicate the date of issue of the specific licence, but not when the holder first qualified as a driver. It is therefore advisable to apply for a printout and Confirmation Letter of one's drivers licence from the Road Traffic Management Corporation prior to travelling or whilst abroad if you are planning to hire a vehicle. Some countries may not accept South African drivers' licences as valid licences and it may be prudent to apply for an international drivers licence from the Automobile Association before departure from South Africa.

Process to follow

Request the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) (in writing) for a printout and Confirmation Letter of your drivers licence. Your request must include your contact details (including fax number), a copy of your ID and a copy of your drivers licence.
